Welcome to Year 5. There will be a lot to celebrate and enjoy this year as we embark on some very exciting themes and visits. I am sure you are all looking forward to our residential visit to Lindisfarne. It will be so much fun!
Our main topic themes for the year are:
What is a pilgrimage?
Why did the Vikings invade Lindisfarne?
What will we find in Brazil?
What is there beyond Earth?
Learning in Year 5
A more detailed look at our expectations for each year group can be found by exploring the subject pages under the curriculum tab and our yearly overview can be accessed by clinking the link below.
To support our understanding of our topics we have planned exciting visits which will enrich our learning and give our children the opportunity to develop their social skills.
Our proposed visits for this year are:
- A 3 day residential to Lindisfarne
- Fountains Abbey - Day in the Life of a Monk
- Bewerley Park
- St Peters School in Leeds
In Year 5 children are encouraged to read every night and record this in their reading diaries. We ask children to learn their tables through the use of Times Tables Rockstars at school and at home.
All children have access to a wide variety of books. Children have the opportunity to choose a book of their choice and also a book levelled at their ability. Parents can support their children's learning through reading with them every day, taking children to the local library to read about our topics, and by practicing maths with them. In Year 5 children also use Reading + an online reading package that helps children to develop their ability to read at speed, comprehend different types of texts and learn new vocabulary.
We hope that you can join us each fortnightly our class celebration, when you are invited to share and celebrate learning and see our certificates and rewards being presented.
You are welcome to join us for Welcome Worship. These special worship sessions are led by the children once per term. Join us in the Chapel after drop off for some refreshments and the children will come along to lead worship - its' a great way to catch up with other parents in the class too. Our Welcome Worship dates can be found in our diary dates.
We welcome parental involvement in the life of our school. If you are able to visit the school or help in any way, please contact your child’s class teacher.
We begin Year 5 by taking the children to Lindisfarne for 3 days and this forms the basis of the learning challenge for most of the autumn term. This residential provides ample opportunity to learn many aspects of the curriculum and also allows children to explore the link between our school and Holy Island through the life of St Cuthbert.
